April 1, 2006

A Princeton, Ind., man was fatally injured Saturday, April 1, following an ATV accident near Lynnville. James A. Simpson, 46, was riding his 4-wheeler with his brother and a friend on property owned by Peabody Coal Company. At approximately 1:18 p.m., Simpson started his descent down a steep embankment, when his 4-wheeler overturned on him. Police reports stated that Simpson suffered extensive internal and head injuries.

Indiana Conservation Officer Eric Stamps, who was the first officer on the scene, had spoken to the three riders approximately one hour before the incident. “These types of crashes are common and frequently produce serious injury,” said Stamps. “Mr. Simpson's injuries were considerable, and although he was not wearing a helmet, he may well not have been able to survive the crash [had he been wearing one].” (Source: Tri-State Media)
