Two people were killed Tuesday after they were overcome by gas fumes in an abandoned gold mine in El Dorado County, Calif.

A man and a woman, employees of a private water company, were doing some road work and decided to fill their water tanker with water from the abandoned mine behind 4941 Starke Grade Rd near Newtown, El Dorado County. The two brought a pump into the mine and when they started it, they were overcome by gas fumes.

The woman was reportedly able to get out of the mine and notify someone nearby of the situation. She went back into the mine and was again overcome by the fumes.

Both died from their injuries. Two dogs that were with the two also died. (Source: CBS 13/Sacramento)
