	Fatal Accident Summaries for 2006

A man died after he lost control of his all-terrain vehicle while riding around in a sand and gravel business in Pembroke, N.H. Ryan Scofield, 24, of Concord, was riding the ATV at Concord Sand and Gravel, Inc., when he hit a 3-foot-high mound of gravel and lost control of the vehicle.

The accident happened about 6:45 p.m. Nicholas Ellis, who accompanied Scofield on his own bike, was in the lead when he heard a crash. He turned around and saw his friend bleeding on the ground. Ellis tried unsuccessfully to carry the man out of the pit on his vehicle. He raced home, retrieved his pick-up truck, and broke through the gravel pit’s gate to reach the victim, who was dead.

According to Bob Cole, the company president, Scofield had been warned on many previous occasions about the hazards of riding a bike in the pit and had been told to stay out. Cole also noted that warning signs are prominently posted at the entry gate and on surrounding fencing. (Sources: The Union Leader and MSHA accident reports)
