A 70-year-old Vershire man died July 2 after falling 60 feet down a copper mine shaft in West Fairlee Vermont.

The victim had hiked up to the West Fairlee Copper Mines with a friend when he slipped on rocks and lost his footing at the opening of one of the mine shafts, police said.

The vicitm's friend called down into the shaft, but got no response. The friend then ran about two miles out of the woods to secure help.

Once rescue responders were able to make their way down the shaft, they found that he had died. He had suffered multiple contusions and a large scull fracture, which were determined to be the cause of death.
