An 18-year-old Lansing man whose body was recovered from an Ingham County lake Monday afternoon swam often but had never before been to the body of water where he likely drowned Sunday evening, according to a family friend.

Members of the Capital Area Dive Team recovered the victim's body from Cedar Lake, a former gravel pit in Delhi Township.

The victim was one of five people swimming across the lake when a friend who was about halfway across the lake heard his sons and the victim screaming that they couldn't continue.

"I just think it was the cold water," the father said, "and they panicked."

Cedar Lake is spring fed by water that is about 55 degrees, according to county drain officials. Depending upon recent rains and other weather conditions, that cold water can be very near the surface of the lake, even at this time of year.

The father said he grabbed one of his sons and swam back to the shore, while the 21-year-old friend pulled his other son and the victim in the other direction. In the process, the 18 year-old disappeared.
