Alaska State Troopers have recovered the body of a Delta Junction man who drowned over the Fourth of July weekend.

Dispatchers received a call on Saturday that the victim, 63, went under the water at the gravel pit ponds off Spengler Road but never came back up for air.

The victim was visiting the gravel pit with his wife and two other relatives, according to troopers.

The Fort Greely Police Department, Delta Rescue Squad, the Division of Forestry and freelance drivers were called in to locate the man, who was presumed deceased.

Search efforts were unsuccessful Saturday night and discontinued at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The search resumed at 10 a.m. Sunday, and his body was found just after 7 p.m. in 10-15 feet of water about 30 feet from shore, said trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters.
