A 12-year-old Castle Hayne boy was killed Friday when the ATV he was riding in an abandoned quarry flipped over and pinned him, a spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said.
When emergency medical workers arrived at the quarry, they found the ATV on top of the boy, Smith said, and pulled it off of him. The boy wasnt wearing a helmet, Smith said.
The boy was riding the ATV with a group of other kids who were on other ATVs. Smith said the other kids called 911 to report the accident, but were unable to pull the ATV off of the boy.
The area they were riding in was a flat part of the quarry that also had some mounds, Smith said. He said he did not know how the kids got onto the private property, which is gated from the roadway.
A couple of Holly Shelter Road residents, who gathered at the entrance to the property Friday evening, said they often saw young children and teenagers ride ATVs around the property and that it was a popular pastime in the Castle Hayne area.
