Elderly Man Drowns in Quarry

The body of a 70-year-old retired firefighter was found in a water-filled gravel quarry this morning. A nearby fisherman called police at 7:20 a.m. to report that the man's fishing gear was floating in the water, but that the man was nowhere to be found.

The old New Jersey quarry is a popular fishing area comprised of several ponds, many of which have steep slopes. Police Chief Ed Donohue believes the man waded into deep water and was unfortunately unable remain afloat.

The Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company located and removed the body from 12 feet of water at 8:08 a.m.
