A 16-year-old Elmira, N.Y., boy drowned while swimming in an Ashland gravel pit, despite the desperate rescue efforts of his friends and a passing motorist. The victim was pronounced dead one half-hour after he was pulled from the pond by members of the Wellsburg Fire Department dive team. According to police, the youth was swimming with three teen-aged friends at about 6:15 p.m., at a property clearly marked with no trespassing signs. The victim apparently said he didnt think he could finish his swim across the quarry, and turned around to try to return to the other bank. (Source: Elmira Star-Gazette)
