A 20-year-old Southeastern Louisiana University student drowned while swimming with two friends in a gravel pit in Independence, La. The victim’s friends were on one side of the gravel pit, and he was on the other. They reported that he jumped into the water and began swimming toward them. About half way across, he began to struggle. The friends jumped in to swim to him, but by the time they got there, he had gone under. His body was located shortly thereafter by fire department rescue personnel. (Source: The Daily Star/Hammond, La.)
