MSHA measures haul roads in percentages. We do this to maintain consistency. We measure stockpiles, highwalls, and impoundments in degrees, but we measure haul roads in percent grade.
To determine percent grade of a haul road, start at the toe of the road and measure horizontally back 100 feet. At 100 feet measure vertically up to the road. That vertical distance, for example ten feet, is equal to the grade in percent. We would have a 10% grade.
