A National "Coal Safety Awareness Initiative" has been developed to address the recent increase in coal mine fatalities. There have been 28 fatalities as of October 26, 2003. Fifteen of the fatalities have occurred underground and thirteen on the surface. This initiative will begin November 4th and continue through November 21, 2003. Initiative Materials
