Assistant Secretary Joe Main, Deputy Assistant Secretary Patricia Silvey, and Metal and Nonmetal Administrator Neal Merrifield all attended the annual Metal and Nonmetal Southeast District Safety Conference conducted November 4th in Birmingham, AL.  Assistant Secretary Main and Deputy Secretary Silvey visited with the various stakeholder/mining groups in attendance at the event, providing them with an update on current MSHA programs, activities and priorities.  The Southeast District Office conducts this mine safety event each year to keep mine operators up-to-date with important safety information and to hear feedback from the stakeholders about agency activities and initiatives.

While at the conference, MSHA officials visited the Carmeuse Lime & Stone - Longview Operation lime mine in Shelby County, AL. Assistant Secretary Main and Deputy Secretary Silvey attended a safety meeting at the mine, toured the facility, and met with a number of mine employees and supervisors.
