MSHA Renews Cooperative Alliance with National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association

On March 22, 2016, MSHA Assistant Secretary Joseph Main and National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) President and CEO Michael W. Johnson renewed an alliance between the two organizations.  The alliance signing took place at the NSSGA’s 2016 Convention in Nashville, TN.

The alliance will continue to provide aggregate industry personnel, including contractors, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will protect the health and safety of miners working at aggregate operations.

MSHA and NSSGA will continue to work together to:

  • Provide technical assistance to the aggregate industry, including state aggregate associations, for complying with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act), as amended, and its standards in Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Provide information, education and training, and technical assistance to prevent injuries and illnesses.
  • Analyze injury, illness, and citation data to develop training and education tools to improve injury and illness incidence rates.
  • Provide statistical information regarding injuries and illnesses that occur to aggregate workers.
  • Develop and share best practices and effective approaches to improve mine safety and health.
  • Develop and disseminate information on mine safety and health at conferences, events, or through print and electronic media, including links from MSHA's and NSSGA's web sites.
  • Speak, exhibit, or participate at workshops, conferences, and other stakeholder meetings to proactively address mine safety and health issues.
