This week, the 33rd Annual Mine Rescue Contest, sponsored by the Missouri Mine Rescue Association, was held in Rolla, Missouri. Twenty-six mine rescue teams from metal and nonmetal mines across the state participated in this contest.
The mine rescue team of the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP), or WIPP Blue Team, was the big winner at the contest. The WIPP Blue Team also captured the award for “Best Out of State” team and took home honors for winning first place in the first aid competition.
The Vulcan Materials Blue Team won second place in the field competition, while the team from Newmont Mining earned third place.
The Solvay Chemical Silver Team placed second in the first aid contest. The Doe Run Maroon Team placed third in the first aid contest and also won the award for “Best in State.”
MSHA Assistant Secretary Joe Main attended the last day of the contest and provided remarks at the contest banquet.
