Description:

The Mines data set contains a list of all coal and metal/non-metal mines in the United States that have been tracked by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

What’s in the Data Set:

  • An indicator of whether the mine is currently active, abandoned, non-producing, or has some other status
    • CURRENT_MINE_STATUS
  • Ownership Information
    • CURRENT_CONTROLLER_ID
    • CURRENT_CONTROLLER_NAME
    • CURRENT_OPERATOR_ID
    • CURRENT_OPERATOR_NAME
  • What materials or minerals the mine produces (e.g., coal, gold, limestone)
    • PRIMARY_SIC
    • SECONDARY_SIC
    • PRIMARY_CANVASS
  • Mine Characteristics
    • CURRENT_MINE_TYPE
    • COAL_METAL_IND
    • AVG_MINE_HEIGHT
  • A unique Mine ID number that each mine has, serving as its identifier in the database
    • MINE_ID

Notes:

  • The data set also includes mines that are abandoned or sealed, not just currently operating mines.
  • Join this data set with other mine-level data sets (e.g., inspections, employment/production) using the Mine ID.
  • The data set can be linked to other data sets using this key field:
    • Mine ID – to connect it with the Employment/Production, Inspection, Violations and Accidents data
