The Violations data set contains detailed records of violations issued as a result of an MSHA inspections. It contains details about the specific citation/order/safeguard issued, Section of the Mine Act violated, relevant dates, and the conditions or practices which caused and constituted a violation or an imminent danger.

What’s in the Data Set:
- Identifier of the violator (company or contractor)
- Mine where the violation occurred
- Key dates (violation date and issuance date)
- The type of citation or order and legal C.F.R. Mine Act sections violated
- Gravity of the violation
- Negligence level
- Number of people affected
- Penalty amount
- Whether the violation was contested
Notes:
- This data set is sourced from information collected from entries of MSHA Form 7000-3.
- It includes comprehensive metadata such as controller and violator IDs, mine types, enforcement areas, and penalty payment details.
- Vacated violations (i.e., violations that were later voided) are not included.
- It includes only final citations and orders (i.e., those for which no contest was filed within 30 days and/or those that have been fully adjudicated and are final).
- A field called Type_Action1 provides additional classification of each violation.
