
Description:
The Contractor Employment Production (Quarterly) data set provides quarterly data on employment and coal production reported by contractors working at mines across the United States. The figures are aggregated and reported at the national level and are organized by subunit, which identifies the specific area or type of activity within the mining operation. Quarterly Employment/Production data is posted on the first Friday of the second month following the quarter.

What’s in the Data Set:
A subunit describes where or how the mining activity takes place. Each subunit is assigned a code:
- 01 – Underground mining
- 02 – Surface operations at an underground mine
- 03 – Strip mine, quarry, or open pit
- 04 – Auger mining (Coal Mine Only)
- 05 – Culm bank or refuse pile (Coal Mine Only)
- 06 – Dredge operations
- 12 – Other surface mining (Metal/Nonmetal Only)
- 17 – Independent shops or yards
- 30 – Mill operations or preparation plants
- 99 – Office workers at the mine site
Total employee hours worked during the quarter, quarterly coal production in tons, and an indicator specifying whether the data pertains to a coal or metal/non-metal mine.

Notes:
- The quarterly data set is released between 30 and 45 days after the end of each quarter.
- The data set is collected from the Quarterly Mine Employment and Coal Production Reports (MSHA Form 7000-2).
- Contractor data is reported only at the national level and cannot be broken down by individual mines, states, or other regional categories.
