The Accidents, Injuries and Illnesses data set provides detailed information about all accidents, injuries, and illnesses reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) by mine operators and contractors.

What’s in the Data Set:
Each record represents a reported incident involving miners, and includes information such as:
- Date, time and location of the accident, injury or illness
- Type and cause of the accident
- Nature and severity of any injury or illness
- Equipment and activities involved
- Experience level of the affected miner
- Lost workdays, restricted activity, or fatality
- Mine ID, Operator Name, and Controller/Contractor IDs help identify where the incident took place and who was responsible
- Type of accident, classification (e.g., slip, equipment failure), and mining method used (e.g., longwall, continuous miner)
- Part of body affected, type of injury (e.g., fracture, burn), severity (e.g., fatality, lost workdays), and number of injuries
- Job title, total mining experience, mine-specific experience, and shift time
- Days lost or restricted, return-to-work date, and whether the miner was permanently transferred or terminated
- The IMMED_NOTIFY field indicates whether the accident must be reported to MSHA immediately, such as in cases of fatalities, fires, or entrapments
- A brief written summary of what happened
- Each incident is uniquely identified by a document number (DOCUMENT_NO) field
- COAL_METAL_IND is an indicator of whether the mine is coal or metal/non-metal
Notes:
- Some fields may contain missing or default values (e.g., “No Value Found” or “?”) when details were not available or not applicable
- The data set is collected from Mine Accident, Injury and Illness Reports (MSHA Form 7000-1)
