Description:

The Assessed Violations data set contains detailed records of violations issued to mine operators, contractors, or individuals that have resulted in assessed penalties, following inspections or investigations conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

What’s in the Data Set:

Each record represents an assessed violation and includes information about the mine, the violator, the penalty, and the context such as relevant dates and violation history.

  • Assessment case number – a unique number used to track each penalty case
  • Mine Act Section Code – refers to the specific law, standard, or regulation that was violated
  • Proposed penalty amounts – the original fine amount suggested for the violation
  • Assessment and interest amounts – the current total due, including the final fine and any interest for late payment
  • Various penalty points – points assigned based on the seriousness of the violation (e.g., how dangerous the violative condition was, whether the company has a history of violations, etc.)
  • Assessed case status information – the current status of the case, such as whether it’s been closed, paid, or is still pending
