The Noise Samples data set contains records of noise exposure levels measured by MSHA inspectors in mines.

What’s in the Data Set:

  • Each row in the data set is a survey record, and each one is uniquely identified using a combination of a form number and a noise survey number.
    • MINE_ID
    • EVENT_NO
    • VIOLATION_NO
    • FORM_NO
    • SURVEY_NO
  • The machines running at the time are documented.
    • MACHINE_CD
    • MANUFACTURER_CD
  • The type of hearing protection used is recorded.
    • PHP_CAP
    • PHP_MUFF
    • PHP_PLUG
  • The locations and times when the samples were taken are specified.
    • SURVEY_DATE
    • START_TIME
  • Information on who or which miner occupation or job, was exposed to the noise.
    • OCCUPATION_CD
    • P_CODE

  • The data set can be linked to other data sets using these key fields:
    • Mine ID – to connect it with the Mines data
    • Event Number – to connect it with the Inspections data
