METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 23, 2008, a 64 year-old dredge operator with 24 years experience was fatally injured at a dredge operation. While the victim was working alone, he fell into the water and drowned.

Best Practices
- Always wear a life jacket where there is a danger of falling into the water.
- Set up a communications schedule with other when persons work alone.
- Ensure that a dredge has hand rails, of substantial construction and height, to prevent persons from falling overboard.
