Description:

The Quartz Samples - Coal data set contains detailed records of air samples collected in coal mines. These samples are used to measure the amount of quartz (a type of silica dust) in the air. Samples are collected by mine operators and MSHA inspectors.

What’s in the Data Set:

Each record in the data set represents one air sample, uniquely identified by a combination of these variables:

  • CASSETTE_NO – the serial number on the dust filter used to collect the sample
  • LABORATORY_NO – identifies the lab that processed the sample

Mine and miner information

  • MINE_ID
  • MINER_NO
  • OCCUPATION_CODE
  • Sampling and analysis dates
  • Quartz percentage and concentration
  • Sample type (e.g., personal or area sample)
  • Survey type and reason for sampling
  • Void codes, if the sample was deemed invalid
