MSHA and the IMA-NA have agreed to work to improve miner safety and health through cooperative efforts in education and training, technical assistance, mining industry outreach and communications. They will develop safety and health education and training programs tailored for industrial minerals operations, develop best practices, and evaluate exemplary applied engineering controls. They will share results of their joint efforts with others in the mining industry.

A team of MSHA and IMA-NA members met to 'data-mine' injuries that occurred in the industrial minerals industry in calendar years 2001 through 2003. The team reviewed and analyzed injury and illness data for the talc, mica, feldspar, industrial sand, trona, bentonite, borate, and clay mining industries.
