As of February 1, 2016, mine operators will be required to use the Continuous Personal Dust Monitor (CPDM) to sample for respirable coal mine dust on working sections of underground coal mines and other areas approved by the District Manager. In addition, the CPDM must be used to sample air for all Part 90 miners, and may be used for sampling at surface mines if approved by the District Manager. The new requirements are contained in the final rule issued by MSHA to protect miners from black lung disease.
All who sample, maintain or calibrate CPDMs must complete an MSHA Course of Instruction, pass an examination, and be certified by MSHA. For the convenience of operators and miners, MSHA is scheduling courses of instruction and certification exams at locations across the country. Each class and exam, held separately for Sampling and for Maintenance & Calibration, will last about 8 hours.
Slide presentations outlining the respective Courses of Instruction are available through the buttons at left. Also available are two sets of Examination Pool Questions, from which the test questions will be pulled. MSHA encourages all candidates for certification to review the materials in order to prepare for the certification process and to be better educated about the responsibilities and duties of those who hold these MSHA certifications.
Scheduled courses are listed below, and more may be added. Advanced registration via phone call or email is REQUIRED to ensure adequate space and instruction resources. Registration contact information is listed below for each location.
In addition, mine operators may request an on-site course presentation by MSHA by contacting their local MSHA District Office beginning May 1, 2015.
For general questions, please contact your local MSHA District Office.
